NEW SPACES EMERGE.

NEW POSSIBILITIES BECOME AVAILABLE ONCE AGAIN TO THE URBAN LIFE.

THESE ARE PORT SPACES, DIFFERENT FROM THE URBAN ENVIRONMENTS THEY BORDER. 

THE CITY HAS “STOPPED” AT THE GREAT STONE WALL. 

BELOW LIES THE PORT: A DIFFERENT SCALE, A DIFFERENT DENSITY, A DIFFERENT CHARACTER. IN SHORT, DIFFERENT RULES.

 

LET’S START WITH THESE RULES, AND WITH THE CANAL TRACED IN RENZO PIANO’S “BLUEPRINT” PROJECT, WHICH BECOMES THE TRUE TRACE OF THE PROJECT. 

THE STRUCTURE OF THE RESIDENTIAL VOLUMES “EXTRUDES” OUTWARD, TRANSFORMING ITSELF INTO PORTICOES, AWNINGS, AND BOAT MOORINGS: A CONTINUOUS EXCHANGE BETWEEN DEFINITION AND APPROPRIATION, PERMANENCE AND TRANSIENCE. THE SECTION OF THE NEW BUILDINGS FIRST AND FOREMOST COINCIDES WITH THE SECTION OF THE CANAL.

THE PORT BECOMES ONCE AGAIN A PLACE OF EXCHANGE, BOTH PHYSICAL AND CULTURAL, A CONNECTION BETWEEN SEA AND CITY. PEOPLE RETURN TO THE SEA AND RETURN TO ARRIVING FROM THE SEA.
